  • Seismic blasting, used to locate offshore oil and gas deposits, injures whales, sea turtles and fish, and destroys zooplankton, tiny creatures vital to marine food chain.

  • Underwater oil drilling releases mud, smothering the cold-water corals that provide vital habitat for young fish.

  • Increased oil-industry shipping traffic raises the risk of fatal strikes to marine mammals, such as endangered North Atlantic right whales.

The threat of oil and gas

Right now, nothing stops oil and gas activities in Canada’s marine protected areas and marine refuges, even though such development has a terrible impact on ocean wildlife:

Soon, the federal government will decide whether marine protected areas should ban activitiesuch as oil and gas development.

Will you tell the prime minister today that you support high standards for marine protection in Canada, including a ban on oil and gas activity?

This could change, with your help

This could change, with your help.

Marine protected areas should be safe havens for wildlife. Canada’s marine protected areas are home to endangered species such as leatherback sea turtles and northern bottlenose whales. Animals such as the North Atlantic right whale and others are imperiled by human contact and they need protected ocean spaces if they are to survive.

But “protected doesn’t mean what it sounds like when it comes to Canada’s oceans. In fact, it doesn’t mean much.

Protected doesn’t mean what you think it does

Dear Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,

It’s time that Canada’s marine protected areas offer real protection to marine life.

I’m writing to you today to let you know that I support strong protections for Canada’s oceans, including no oil and gas activities in marine protected areas and refuges.

Canada’s oceans support life and livelihoods on all three coasts. To keep our oceans healthy, we need protected places where activities that disrupt the ecosystem, such as oil and gas development, are not allowed. This is both common sense and backed up by science.

As your government prepares to decide on minimum standards for marine protected areas, please demonstrate that oil and gas development is never compatible with conservation.

Yours sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
