WWF-Canada works to safeguard Canada’s longest wild and free-flowing rivers.
These rivers support vibrant communities of both people and wildlife by:
Unfortunately, Canada lacks a comprehensive strategy to safeguard these national treasures.
In June 2019, the amended Canadian Navigable Waters Act (CNWA) was passed into law. The Act aims to protect the navigation rights of all Canadians. By protecting navigation rights for people, we’re also helping species to move freely throughout their habitat.
Under the CNWA, there is a List of Scheduled Waters, which means any projects on these rivers receive additional oversight. Currently, this only includes 164 out of Canada’s thousands of waters.
In our discussions with Transport Canada, we recommended that the longest wild and free-flowing rivers, as well as the Canadian Heritage Rivers, should be on the Schedule. They agreed to propose adding 25 rivers to the Schedule of the new CNWA.
Although Transport Canada has proposed adding the new rivers, there is still work to do. Transport Canada is looking for public feedback and the list is open to public consultation until July 19. Show your support for adding the rivers by sending a message to Transport Canada today!
